Why Does Manual Lymphatic Drainage Use Such a Gentle Touch?

August 16, 2026

When most people think of massage, they may imagine deeper pressure means deeper results. Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage (MLD) is different.

One reason is the location and structure of the initial lymphatic vessels.

The initial lymphatics are tiny vessels located very close to the surface of the skin. They form an interconnected network that helps collect excess fluid and other substances from the surrounding tissue and begin the process of forming lymph.

Because this part of the lymphatic system is so superficial, MLD uses light, specific, rhythmic movements rather than deep pressure. The goal isn't to forcefully work into the muscles. Instead, the technique works with the tissues and the superficial lymphatic network.

As I continue studying the lymphatic system in depth, I find myself looking at massage in a new way. More pressure isn't always better - I've have believed this to be true for a very long time now but more and more I see the reason why. Sometimes the most effective approach is the gentlest one.

If you're curious about Manual Lymphatic Drainage and how it differs from traditional massage, I invite you to learn more about MLD and how it may fit into your wellness routine? Give me a call or text (808) 264 - 8643 to book or learn more.
